>> From the Chamber Desk

It’s hard to believe that we are approaching the end of August already – it has been a month of activity for the Chamber. The Economic Forum held at the end of July was a great event and my thanks to all sponsors, exhibitors and delegates who were able to attend. We heard from a number of speakers discussing a variety of topics, all showcasing our theme of “Strength in Diversity”. We have received positive feedback regarding the event and were particularly pleased that our efforts to focus on the local region resonated with so many delegates.

Kate Bertola
Executive Promotions Officer

David Kempton, LNP Candidate for Cook spoke at our August Luncheon and this provided an opportunity for members to hear first-hand what his priorities would be in the event that he won at the next state election. His three main priorities would be to:

  • Hold a referendum on Local Council amalgamation within the original Mareeba Shire to determine what the residents want

  • Examine the Health Services currently offered in the region, paying particular attention to the COAG funding

  • Conduct an audit on Infrastructure Requirements for the region

Other topics included the desire to cut ‘red tape’, working with other electorates throughout the region in order to speak with one voice and basing an electorate office in Mareeba.

There has been a lot of recent media attention surrounding the Department of Transport and Main Roads and we believe it is important for our members and the community to have the opportunity to seek facts through open and frank discussions. This has resulted in the offer to Department of Transport and Main Roads to address our next luncheon – Friday 2nd September at Mareeba RSL. Key topics include:

  • Discussion on the Regional Integrated Transport Plan

  • Proposed Changes to Byrnes Street

  • Mareeba Bypass

Planning is underway for our Biennial Business Awards and promises to be the highlight of the year. Past recipients of the Awards all agree this great initiative of the Chamber highlights what talent exists within the local business community.

Another Chamber initiative is to undertake a marketing campaign that will promote the region as a place for people and businesses to relocate. Many of you will have seen the ads we developed earlier in the year and we are now planning on utilising these as the basis of the campaign. At the same time we are looking to embark on a campaign encouraging people to shop and buy locally. Firstly, however we believe it is important for us to consider why people don’t shop locally and so we are seeking to undertake a customer survey throughout the region to determine shopping habits. This will then allow us to form the basis of our campaign and should ensure that we market appropriately.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of my colleague Tracey Braes during her time with the Chamber. As many of you are aware, Tracey has been juggling working at the Chamber and developing her Graphic Design Business – Wild Cherry. Due to its success, Tracey has made the decision to leave the Chamber. We wish Tracey all the best with her future endeavours.

Regards, Kate, and the Executive Committee

Chamber Around the Ridges

I had the pleasure of attending all 3 Think Tank sessions held throughout the region. The aim of the sessions was to focus on specific local, national and global drivers impacting on the Tablelands region over the next 10 years. It was great to see large numbers of people attending and wanting to have their say on the future of the region. The next phase will be the Regional Summit where the Community Plan will be released. It is being held in Atherton on 14th September 2011. If you are interested in attending, please get in touch with Joy Wii joyw@trc.qld.gov.au.

As you may have seen in the local media, Cairns is vying to be the home of a new recruitment and training centre for Rio Tinto Alcan. At a Cairns Chamber event last week the General Manager Operations Rio Tinto Alcan, Ms Scarini made a commitment to “ensure that local employment criteria is included in relevant contracts” and also discussed the fact that almost 400 jobs would be created in retail and services industries. Should this project go ahead, there a number of benefits to the region – not only Cairns - and it is important for the Chamber and the local business community to work together to ensure we maximise these benefits.

The Port Douglas and Mossman Gazette recently discussed the potential demise of the Mossman Chamber of Commerce due to a lack of local businesses participating in the Chamber. I believe it would be a shame for this to occur as I think it is important for the business community to have an advocate for their views and to have someone to champion their cause. It also demonstrates how important it is for the committee to interact with the members to continue to provide the services that are relevant to the membership base. Sheldon and the Executive Committee encourage all members to share their views and opinions with them and strive to be the advocate for the business community.

Atherton District Chamber of Commerce is having its AGM on 15th September at the Atherton Golf Club. Dr Geraldine McGuire from Rainforest Bounty will be guest speaker. If you are interested in attending, please contact Connie Duncan connie@firststeps.com.

Canberra, 28 July 2011

Tax Forum Discussion Paper

Today we release a discussion paper to inform public debate on priorities and directions for continuing tax reform in the lead-up to the Tax Forum on 4-5 October.

The Government has put in place a series of major reforms to build a stronger, fairer and simpler tax system, and the upcoming Tax Forum will help us build on that strong record of tax reform.

The Tax Forum will also help identify further reforms to make the most of the opportunities and challenges ahead for Australia, such as the shift in global economic weight from West to East, the ageing of the population and the transition to a clean-energy future.

Beware of unscrupulous operators - protect your business

Small business owners are often busy, with many different tasks on their hands. At times, unscrupulous operators may take advantage of this and attempt to trick a small business owner into making a payment for something they didn’t order, or to agree to goods or services that they don’t need.
