Hi,
What a fabulous turn
out for our official
launch of the 2011
Economic Snapshot at
the March lunch!
Please contact us in
the office if you
would like copies of
the publication – or
check it out online
via the link on our
website. It provides
an excellent
overview of the
region’s economy and
provides an insight
into the future
development and
growth.
The eNewsletter this
month contains an
update on a number
of initiatives
including the Music
in Mareeba project
and the National
Brand Network. We
are also seeking
good news stories
from our members so
please continue to
share your thoughts
and ideas with us.
Next week’s Luncheon
promises to be
extremely
informative with
Wendy Morris from
Port Bajool
providing an update
on their activities
- particularly Mt
Emerald Wind Farm.
We also have some
exciting news to
share about what is
planned for May so
make sure you come
along!
Regards
Kate Bertola

From the
President
The last few
weeks have been busy, challenging and
exciting as we come to terms with all the
issues and projects the Chamber Committee
would like to run with. I will be providing
an update at our next luncheon on April 8th,
so please come along to participate and hear
of all the good things underway. We are
working very hard on luring some big name
guest speakers to Mareeba so stay tuned for
some announcements in the near future.
Letters were sent to all chamber members
over the last few weeks asking for your
suggestions on what you would like to see
the Chamber participating in and also any
good news stories which we can pass around,
so please keep those coming. We hope you
have all had a chance to read the Strength
in Diversity publication and have been able
to take something out of this which can assist
your business. This is an evolving document, so
any suggestions on how we can improve the
publication are welcomed. |

We look
forward to an update
from Wendy Morris, our
luncheon guest speaker,
on progress of the Wind
Farm west of Tolga and
also look forward to
catching up with
everyone next Friday 8th
April.
Remember the Chamber is
only as strong as its
member base, so please
support your local
Chamber of Commerce and
help us to develop
Mareeba into a viable
and prosperous town.
Feel free to contact me
directly on 0409 889 928
should you wish to
discuss any issue or
provide suggestions on
how we can improve the
chamber.
Kind regards,
Sheldon Mulla

From the Chamber Desk
Another busy
month for
the Chamber
team! Once
again I have
had the
opportunity
to speak to
a number of
people –
members and
non-members
and whilst
many people
acknowledge
that busy
has been a
bit tough,
there is
certainly an
element of
optimism for
the future
growth and
development
of the
region. The
ability for
businesses
and industry
to diversify
and adapt to
the changing
environment
is
remarkable
and
showcases
the region
as a great
place to
base your
enterprise.
The influx
of farmers
and other
businesses
to the area
as a result
of recent
natural
disasters is
our
opportunity
to further
grow and
develop our
economic
base.

I have been
speaking with many of the businesses along Byrnes Street
as we try to get the speakers installed in time for the
Mareeba Rodeo weekend in July. It may appear that this
initiative is taking a long time to be completed however
I’m sure you can appreciate the level of consultation
that has occurred (and continues to) between Council,
tenants, owners and the Chamber. All parties need to
agree before we can progress further, however I am happy
to report that local businesses are starting to sign
agreements and return them to the office.
The National Broadband Network continues to be a hot
topic and Tablelands Regional Council has approved funds
in conjunction with the other FNQ Councils for the
purpose of appointing a consultant to assist the region.
David Ives who has previously addressed the members at a
Chamber luncheon last year as a DEEDI (Dept Employment,
Economic Development and Innovation) representative and
has now been appointed as the Consultant. He is
extremely keen to visit the Tablelands region and gain
our perspective so I will let you know once dates have
been confirmed. Wally Donaldson has taken David’s place
at DEEDI which will benefit the region due to his long
history with telecommunications in the area.
We are still seeking feedback from our members on how
they would like to see the Chamber communicate and
interact with our members. One suggestion has been to
change the format of the luncheon to later in the
afternoon, some have suggested breakfast functions might
be better. Perhaps a combination of events might be
appropriate. Tell us what you think – we are open to
suggestions and ideas.
Don’t forget to book for next week’s lunch – sure to be
a great event!
Let us all become active partners in strengthening the
business community in the region and forge the way
forward.
Kind regards,
Kate Bertola Executive Promotions Officer
